59th Grammy Nomination Predictions

A Grammy is certainly an honor to win, but like every other award ceremony in Hollywood, it’s a big popularity contest. Well, it’s not even a popularity contest per say because sometimes the winners are more questionable than popular.

The identities of the people who vote for the Grammys is murky, but every year music lovers pray they get the winner right. Being that the Grammy’s are a considered to be the highest award in the music industry.

Below are my predictions for the 59th Grammy Awards.

Record of The Year

Who Should Win: Rihanna – Work

The Caribbean elements, the tempo, the patois! Work is the Record of The Year. The production on this track is so sharp it shines just as much as the lyrics. The fact that this minimalist, reggae pop song can soar on so many genre platforms is a testament to why it should win in this category.

Who Probably Will Win: Adele – Hello

Hello’s production is flawless. It did its purpose, which was to skyrocket Adele back into the top spot. And I have a feeling that the older Grammy voters will gravitate to Adele over everyone else.

Darkhorse: Lukas Graham  – 7 Years

I had never heard of Lukas Graham before this song, but I heard this song EVERYWHERE. It was one of those songs that you hear but you don’t know the name of it or who sings it.

Song of The Year

Who Should Win: Mike Posner – I Took a Pill in Ibiza

I think lyrically out of all the songs in this category Ibiza is the best. Mike Posner came out of whatever cave he’s been in since 2010 and delivered a really good song.

Who Probably Will Win: Adele – Hello

Hello is a beautiful song and although lyrically I’m not in love with it. I think that Adele’s voice really makes up for that.

Darkhorse:  Lukas Graham – 7 Years

Album of The Year

Who Should Win: Beyonce – Lemonade

Lemonade is the best album out of this list. It took and is STILL taking the world by storm. It certainly had the most impact on the music industry than any other album this year. And quite frankly, Beyonce deserves this Grammy after the Grammy’s mistakenly gave her album of the year award to Beck in 2014…

Who Probably Will Win: Adele – 25

Adele won in this category for 21 back in 2012. Although 25 wasn’t that good of an album tbh, it was popular and she’s an “easy” choice for Grammy voters.

Darkhorse: Sturgill Simpson – A Sailor’s Guide To Earth

This is where the WTH aspect of the Grammy’s come in. Who? What? Sturgill Simpson is a “country soul” singer who doesn’t have much of a Grammy history. He was nominated for Best Americana Album in 2015.

I’m betting as a revolt against pop music many older Grammy voters are going to cast their votes for him. I listened to A Sailor’s Guide To Earth and it is a good album. However, it is received nowhere near the critical praise that 25 or Lemonade did. And it is the least commercially successful album in this category so, no it shouldn’t win.

Absolutely Not: Justin Bieber – Purpose

Yeah, Purpose is actually a good album, but it is also a Justin Bieber album. And I doubt that the majority of Grammy voters are going to vote for Bieber to win the top award of the night… ever.

Who Should Win: Rihanna ft. Drake – “Work”

Who Probably Will Win: Rihanna ft. Drake – “Work”

Darkhorse: The Chainsmokers ft. Haley – “Closer”

This song was inescapable I think it almost broke the record for being number one on the charts for the most week. And the Chainsmokers are nominated for Best New Artist so I wouldn’t be surprised if they snatched this category.

R&B

Best R&B Performance

Who Should Win: Solange – “Cranes in the Sky”

Cranes in the Sky is the shining star on an already bright album. One of the best R&B songs of 2016.

Who Probably Will Win: Rihanna – “Needed Me”

Darkhorse: Ro James – “Permission”

Best R&B Performance

Who Should Win: Rihanna – “Kiss It Better”
