“We’re born naked and the rest is drag” — RuPaul
I recently got put onto RuPaul’s Drag Race and now I’m addicted!
I have known of this show for years, but I’ve never watched it, mostly because I didn’t really understand drag queen culture. My previous impressions of the show were that it was just a bunch of shady gay guys prancing around in gowns for dollars. I felt like the whole concept was superficial and pointless.
And yes the cast is shady, they are competing for a cash prize and there are great gowns, but the show has so many more layers!
I feel like this is the first reality show that I’ve ever watched where the cast members are actually talented. They’re not just a group of “friends”, who gossip about each other at restaurants every episode. They’re designers, artist, actors, musicians, dancers and comedians. The talent is endless.
RuPaul’s Drag Race is of course hosted by none other than Emmy award-winning, pop culture phenomenon RuPaul. Who is HILARIOUS! I could laugh at his laugh alone for at least half a day. I love all of his weird quirks and isms. He’s changed the game because usually hosts of game shows are annoying and robotic, but Ru adds a ton of personality to the role. I mean I guess you have to have a lot personality when you have pounds of makeup on.
One of my favorite parts of the show is when Ru is walking around the workroom conversing with the contestants after they have gotten their task for the main challenge. He’s kind of like a tutor in a classroom. He gives little critiques and advice, but ultimately the contestants do their own work.
Oh and he also READs them to filth. But not with words, just with his facial expressions. Some of them come up with these ridiculous ideas for the challenge and Ru’s facial expressions + plus the music that plays in the background, makes for REALITY TV GOLD. The editing on this show is perfect.
Drag Race is wildly creative and also very inspiring. It actually made my lazy ass want to take up a hobby. I wish I was half as creative as some of the contestants on the show. They have to perform in skits and create outfits from scratch. Sing live and perform comedy shows. All while tucking! Drag certainly is an art that doesn’t get the recognition it deserves.
I’m so fascinated by it all. How does Ru keep his wig on his bald head? How do they create cleavage? How much makeup do they go through in a week? And my biggest question HOW DO THEY TUCK FOR SO LONG? Like really… I cringe at the thought of having my testicles and penis pulled back and taped in my butt for hours.
But anyway, RuPaul’s Drag Race is amazing. I think that a show like this is defiantly needed in the reality TV world. Gay guys, especially feminine gay guys are stereotyped as being messy, heartless, bitches. But this show has so much heart. A lot more heart than almost every reality show featuring a group of “friends”. I’m just saying.
